Under Lucescu’s leadership, Galatasaray reached the quarter-finals of the 2000–01 Champions League season, where after a 3–2 victory in the first leg against Real Madrid, they lost the second leg 3–0. On 2 August 2017, he was appointed as the new head coach of Turkey, succeeding Fatih Terim. On 24 May 2016, Lucescu agreed to a two-year deal with Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg, with an extension option for another year.
